Types

La serie Types nasce nel 2005 e comprende un blocco iniziale di quindici figure a grandezza naturale dipinte ad olio su tavola. I Types studio, invece, sono i bozzetti o gli studi preparatori (di misure più ridotte), olio e tempera su tavola. Types sono il tentativo di catalogare tipologie umane contemporanee in pose statiche (fronte profilo) e loro accessori per divenire una sorta di enciclopedia della varietà umana: un bestiario dipinto. A seguito di questa iniziale traccia, sono seguite ulteriori serie negli anni successivi con finalità ed intenti diversi, ma sempre catalogati come Types.

"...Figure a grandezza naturale assolutamente decontestualizzate, senza fondale o ambientazione, ritagliate su campitura a platt... figura o meglio soggetto-oggetto-uomo, in tutta la sua corposa presenza... Catalogare attraverso la scelta di alcune individualità una parte di umanità… con i propri accessori, divenuti i veri attributi o caratteri distintivi della persona... la confezione super accessoriata di esseri indifesi dove la nuda verità del sé rende vulnerabili... Così Nannini accosta gli oggetti distintivi di ciascuno, a lato come nelle confezioni delle bambole o le icone negli schermo dei Pc, o nel disegno infantile senza prospettiva, a fianco del personaggio che, in un gioco tutto mentale, ne farà uso o lo riporrà in tasca... Il disegno è preciso, minuzioso. Le cromie dense e pastose in alternanza di campiture e colpi di spatola dove la materia enfatizza i punti luce; velature e sfregazzi, volumi solidi di carni pesanti e grumi di pigmento, fiotti di colore e trasparenze... l'incarnato vive di una tavolozza molto complessa… mette a fuoco i tratti salienti e lascia le preparazioni dei fondi negli elementi periferici: materia nei dettagli fino a scendere di volume alla piana dei bruni sottostanti, nelle ombre più cupe dove l'occhio non indugia".

The Types series emerged in 2005 and consisted of an initial batch of fifteen life-size figures painted in oil on board. The Types Studio, on the other hand, are sketches or preliminary studies (of reduced dimensions), in oil or tempera on board. Types are an attempt to catalogue contemporary human types in static poses (frontal and side) with their accessories, thus becoming a sort of encyclopaedia of the varieties of humankind: a painted bestiary. In the wake of this initial output, others were to follow in subsequent years, with different aims and motivations, but they were still classified as  Types.

"...Life-size figures completely decontextualised, without backdrop or surroundings, cut out on a flat background... figure or rather subject-object-man, with all his bodily presence... Cataloguing a part of humanity through the selection of certain individual characters... with their accessories, which become the real attributes or distinctive traits of the people... being a super-accessorised package as a defence mechanism, where the naked truth about oneself makes one vulnerable... In this way Nannini places people's distinctive appurtenances at their side, as with dress-up paper dolls or the icons on a computer screen, or in children's drawings without perspective, playfully imagining that this person will use or put back in his/her pocket the accessories in question. The drawing is precise, meticulous, the hues are dense and thick, with alternating colour fields and splashes of paint laid on with a palette knife where the material emphasises the spots of light; washes and scumbling, solid volumes of heavy flesh and lumps of pigment, spurts of colour and areas of transparency... the flesh is made up of a very complex palette... salient features are highlighted and the preparatory work is left in peripheral elements: the paint in the details reduces in volume, stripped down to the underlying browns, in the gloomy shadows where the eye doesn't linger”.
